Sunday 13th April - Service for Seafarers

at 6:30pm on 13th April

A Service for Seafarers

Conducted by

Canon Bob Evans RNR

Former Chaplain to the Mersey Mission to Seafarers

This service replaces the normal Choral Evensong

Olivet to Calvary

This sacred cantata, by John Henry Maunder, was sung by the choir of St James on Good Friday evening.

The event was well received by a packed church. A retiring collection wat taken in aid of the Barnabus Fund (for oppressed Christians throughout the world)

Quiz Night

A quiz night was held on 29th February.

As usual the quiz was a great success with teams displaying their amazing knowledge (or lack of it) over such subjects as TV Soaps, Food and History. Needless to say there were no full-marks on the Bible questions, so there will be detentions and extra homework for everyone!
The worthy winners were called "Alcopops" - here we see them with their "trophy".

Roof and Gutter Maintenance

On 27th and 28th February, we had the use of the very latest "Cherry Picker" access platform.

This is part of the implementation of a planned maintenance scheme for the roof in general and the guttering in particular. The exposed nature of New Brighton ensures we have more than enough problems with the inaccessible high parts of the church. The use of this machine will allow improved quality of workmanship, to say nothing of safety, in the future. This will hopefully show as improved standards with the internal maintenance and decoration.

The work has been carried out by Evenville Builders of Wallasey to their usual high standard.

Parish Lunch

Following the Parish Service at St. James Church at 10:30am, a parish lunch was held, which was well attended and enjoyed by all. This was followed by a congregational meeting.

Many thanks to all who helped and contributed to the lunch, and to the ladies who prepared it so well.

Nine Lessons and Carols

A traditional and delightful service was held at St. James Church on Sunday 23rd December 2007. This was a well attended service led by the Rev'd Bruce Harry and our wonderful choir. Please view the photo below by clicking to enlarge.

The service was followed by seasonal refreshments thanks to the ladies of the church.

Coffee Morning

The St. James Christmas coffee morning was a great success. It goes without saying that these events to happen without a wonderful band of magnificent volunteers who absolutely made the morning what it was. Thank you also to all those who attended. Here are featured just a few of those who helped.

Christmas Tree

Take a look at the photos of the extremely kind volunteers who cleaned the church and got the Christmas Tree up. Thanks guys!

Remembrance Day

On Remembrance Day, Sunday 11th November, we shall be having an event with music. Instead of choral evensong we will be presenting "We will Remember Them", a devotion for choir and congregation. Dedicated to those who gave their lives in the armed conflicts since World War I, this will consist of hymns, bible readings and items of poetry and prose written either at the time of conflict, or as a reflection about it. There are linking musical items which were written especially for the season of remembrance. All are welcome: starting time 6.30pm, finishing before 8pm.

Lifeboat Service

On Sunday, 14th October at 11.15 am, we held the annual Lifeboat Service at St James' with the RNLI. The Service gave thanks for the RNLI lifeboat, its crew and the work that they do. Lifeboat operations are managed by Cliff Downing who says: "This is an annual event where members of the New Brighton RNLI Lifeboat and their families and friends gather to give thanks for the Lifeboat and to pray for the safety of the crew and those who they rescue in the coming year." After the service we all enjoyed a cuppa and chat with the New Brighton RNLI Lifeboat crew members.

Organ Recital

Everyone would like me to give a big thank you to the choir and all those who helped to give us such an enjoyable evening on Wednesday 16th May.

For those of you who couldn't make it for any reason, you missed a lovely evening of music.

Professor Ian Tracey very kindly played at the Inaugural Recital of our new-to St. James-organ. As he had played it when he was a schoolboy it must have brought back memories. He made our organ sound superb and played a variety of musical pieces on it that spanned nearly five hundred years. I'm sure many of us were surprised at one, " It's all in the Game " has been sung by several people including Cliff Richard. We learnt it was actually written in 1912 by Brigadier General Charles Dawes and was called " Melody in A ".

The choir all looked wonderful, very different from their normal garb of choir robes. The ladies dressed beautifully and the men looked very smart in evening dress and bow ties.

There was a cheese and wine buffet for after the performance and it did look lovely. Of course we all assisted in demolishing this, and it was thoroughly enjoyed. A tasty ending to a lovely evening.

Once again, thank you for a lovely evening.
